Senior Machine Learning Engineer 

Kindred's ambition is to be the most insight driven gambling company and in the last few years we've invested heavily in our data and analytics capabilities. We are now at the next stage of our journey, building our capability for developing end-to-end machine learning data products, from research conducted by our Data Scientists through to production applications built by our Machine Learning Engineers. We are looking for Machine Learning Engineers with significant experience in product development and/or MLOps.

Our Machine Learning Engineers align with and work closely with Data Scientists in cross-functional product teams and are jointly responsible for the development of high-quality data products. We are currently focusing on areas including personalisation and product risk management and have ambitions to expand our scope to areas including marketing and cyber security in the near future.

Additionally, we are building the core toolset and capability required for our product teams to scale efficiently and iterate rapidly. This includes our Model as a Service deployment platform, developing a feature store for use in both research and production contexts, and building the frameworks we need to monitor and test our products. 


What you will do 

While your focus will depend on whether your experience aligns with product development or MLOps, we expect that your responsibilities will include:


  • Developing and maintaining our model deployment framework (Model as a Service). 
  • Developing and maintaining our feature store. 
  • Developing and maintaining our MLOps ecosystem to facilitate rapid and scalable deployments of data products. 
  • Close relationship with DS to optimize toolset for research. 
  • Close relationship with ML engineers in product development teams to understand challenges and identify MLOps priorities. 
  • Maintaining a culture of discipline and best engineering practice. 

Product development

  • Execution of personalisation and risk management product development backlogs. 
  • Designing data intensive applications, working with Lead MLE and Architects. 
  • End to end understanding and taking responsibility for data products developed by you and your team. 
  • Close collaboration with data science teams as research backlogs will feed into engineering backlogs. Able to effectively communicate with data scientists to ensure proposed solutions can be practically implemented.  
  • Maintaining a culture of discipline and best engineering practice. 


About you 

We think that to be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate the following attributes: 

✅ 3-5 years relevant commercial experience.  

✅ Experience working alongside Data Scientists.  

✅ A portfolio of deliveries of ML products. 

✅ Experience deploying models as batch, streams, and as services.  

✅ Strong Scala/Java skills.  

✅ Python skills 

✅ Experience deploying containerized applications onto Kubernetes.  

✅ Experience using Kafka (including Kafka Streams).  

✅ Data Engineering experience.  

✅ Solid understanding of the machine learning model lifecycle and operations (MLOps).  

✅ Experience in cloud computing, ideally AWS.  

✅ Passionate about your personal development.  

✅ Excellent interpersonal skills: able to collaborate, explain complex topics and contribute to the success of cross-functional DS/MLE product teams.  

✅ Ability to deal with and account for uncertainty, with the flexibility to learn by iteration. Proactive. 

In addition, it will be of benefit if you also have: 

  • Experience using Spark (including Spark SQL and Streaming).  
  • Experience with Kubeflow  
  • Experience with Airflow 
  • Solid understanding of statistical modelling and machine learning methodologies.  
  • A knowledge of enterprise data concepts, including Data Mesh. 
  • A knowledge of enterprise service concepts, including Service Mesh.  
  • AWS certification. 
  • An interest in mentoring and coaching more junior team members.
