Legal Counsel, North America


As Legal Counsel, you will support the North America team by working on different legal matters such as drafting and reviewing commercial contracts and other legal documents, overseeing litigation and managing outside counsel, drafting legal policies to support the business in their day-to-day operations (e.g. marketing policy, use of IP in commercial campaigns), etc. You will also work on data protection and privacy-related matters in North America, ensuring that local business processes (both customer- and supplier-facing) are compliant with state privacy legislation, and internal stakeholders have a good understanding of local privacy requirements

Key responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and drafting legal documents and commercial contracts
  • Supervising advertising and promotional campaigns in close cooperation with the compliance team
  • Providing feedback on legal terms and conditions
  • Assisting with customer complaints escalated to the legal team and draft routine letters and correspondences
  • Managing litigation and pre-litigation matters, including coordination with external lawyers
  • Keeping oversight of various local legislative developments and industry-specific trends that could impact the business and proactively inform all relevant internal stakeholders so that necessary changes can be actioned timely
  • Securing that legal policies and guidelines are followed by internal stakeholders through training, information sessions and keeping policies up to date and relevant
  • Advising the business on overall compliance with local laws and regulations
  • Conducting legal research and analyses, prepare presentations and consolidated reports for the Group Deputy General Counsel, and prepare summaries (including case summaries).
  • Dealing with ad hoc legal matters as required by the Group Deputy General Counsel and as required by the needs of the business.

Data protection and privacy:

  • Advise business stakeholders on a broad range of data privacy matters in North America and the states where we have operations (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Iowa, Virginia, Arizona, etc.)
  • Conducting privacy risk assessments of new projects, initiatives, products, and business processes in accordance with local regulations
  • Draft, negotiate, and advise on data protection agreements, and other contracts and disclosures
  • Draft and keep up to date internal policies, privacy notices and other privacy-related documents for the North America operations
  • Monitor developments in the data protection legal landscape in North America (US states and Canada) and update internal records accordingly
  • Assist in designing and delivering training for the business
  • Work with internal business stakeholders to enhance processes ensuring data protection compliance

Core skills and competences

  • Law degree from a reputable university
  • At least 4-5 years of experience, either in private practice (law firm) or in-house in a commercial environment
  • Privacy related certification is a plus
  • Extensive experience in Consumer law, Commercial law and/or Contract law as well as Data Protection & Privacy
  • Good understanding of online technologies and their privacy implications
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build close partnerships with business and legal stakeholders
  • Must be self-driven, resourceful, results and deadline-oriented, and have a high multi-task proficiency.
  • Comfortable with reviewing laws & regulations and dealing with legal documentation and having a solid understanding of regulatory requirements in the relevant markets.
  • Good drafting and negotiating skills
  • Experience with conducting extensive legal research
  • Strong analytical and decisive skills, with the ability to prioritize and communicate key objectives to achieve organizational goals while maintaining accuracy and quality.

Compensation range:

$130,000 - $170,000 Base Annual, Plus Bonus, 401k and Medical Benefits
