Head of Legal

About the role

 

The Head of Legal represents the legal team and its core values at all times and should act as a leader to the team and partner to the business. Due to the nature of the function (legal) and the regulated industry Kindred operates in, the Head of Legal will also have an escalating role to the Group Deputy General Counsel.

 

  • As an advisor, counsellor and business partner, the Head of Legal must have a broad understanding of the cross-border legal and regulatory framework impacting Kindred's business activities. With that cross-border knowledge and helicopter overview, the Head of Legal will empower the legal team in working closely with their local stakeholders (local GMs, PA managers, commercial teams, CS representatives, etc.) in Kindred's key markets, providing all-round, business-minded and hands-on support on all legal matters. The Head of Legal will manage and oversee the legal team in:
    • Pursuing and investing in a market-focused approach whereby legal counsels act as legal experts and primary points of contact for their market stakeholders;
    • Translating legal challenges into comprehensible and executable actions points that protect the business and allow for sustainable business growth opportunities (LeCoR Value Chain);
    • Proactively identifying, actioning and mitigating any legal risks for the business; and
    • Seeking, enabling and supporting Group alignment synergies.
  • As corporate guardian, the Head of Legal has a vital role in continuously identifying, devising and implementing measures to prevent and protect Kindred against all legal risks, both from a geographical and expertise point of view. The Head of Legal is equally in charge of identifying improvements and efficiencies in legal team's way of working and action the outcome of Great Place To Work surveys. As Head of Legal, the function has a positive mandate and authority to take any action needed to pro-actively avoid legal and compliance breaches and ensure operational continuity in a regulated business (no license/no business).

 

About the role

 

  • Overall responsibility for the Legal Team, empowering the team of legal counsel  to provide any type of legal support required within their relevant regions/markets or group functions whilst ensuring this is done in a timely, professional and accurate manner.
  • Have oversight of and continuously evaluate the key legal processes such as
    • Contract review, litigation management, GDPR/privacy policy, market watch, etc.), challenges and developments 
    • Redirect and finetune where required to ensure the quality and accuracy of legal advice is maintained.
  • safeguard the prioritization, planning and execution of key strategical milestones in the legal risk management strategy.
  • Communicate effectively with the Deputy Group General Counsel, seeking appropriate guidance if and when required.
  • Invest in continuous personal developmentand remain informed about all relevant legal and regulatory developments across markets that affect Kindred's operations and the Legal Team's way of working.
  • Manage the smooth functioning of the Legal Team, where transparent communication and information sharing are key, and invest in the mental wellbeing of all team members.
  • Lead, manage, empower and inspire the Legal Team with a strong focus on strategy, delivery, operational excellence, team performance, standing regular team meetings, compliance mindset, sustainability and LeCoR customer value chain, etc.
  • Ensure that resources are aligned with the agreed LeCoR objectives and maintain a strong focus on operational efficiency and process optimisation.
  • Act as champion across the Group and across different stakeholder fora  “Excellence in Compliance and Sustainability” as a positive business value enabler and a basic hygiene factor in a regulated complex industry.
  • The Head of Legal must perform other duties and tasks as assigned from time to time by management and as required by the needs of the business.

 

About you:

 

  • Proven ability to manage and lead international legal teams in a fast-paced industry, with a strong focus on people management (soft skills), technical delivery (high-profile litigation, complex contracts, budgeting, etc.).and operational excellence.
  • Proven knowledge of cross-market international and European legal issues relevant to digital and tech industries.
  • Significant relevant legal experience including at least 5 years in-house, with deep expertise in technology, intellectual property, commercial and digital entertainment matters across a multitude of markets/regions.
  • Proven ability to represent multi-national companies and manage international, high-performance teams.
  • Prior experience supporting a heavy volume of commercial transactions and complex litigation across various business functions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in simultaneously successfully handling different responsibilities, in a high-pressure environment and against strict deadlines, and building on synergies between various teams and stakeholders.
  • Solid understanding of regulated industry trends, both sector specific as from a broader digital point of view, with the ability to proactively translate them into the Kindred reality and represent Kindred's interests in internal and external fora.
  • Strong analytical and decisive skills, excellent legal and business judgment and strategic thinking with the ability to prioritize and communicate key objectives to achieve organizational goals while maintaining accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to foster open and pro-active relationships with direct functional stakeholders.
  • A hands-on, versatile and well-organised “Do-er” who leads by example, has proven to always go the extra mile, is a genuine team player and breathes the Kindred values.
  • A status quo challenger who can think outside the box and is able to revisit and optimise established ways of working to excel the Legal Team.
  • Strong interpersonal and people skills, team player by nature and able to make fast and complex decisions and ensure buy-in from other business stakeholders based on a mutually respectable relation.
  • Confident and assertive with exceptional communication skills and ability to drive teams and encourage people to excel.
  • Languages: English (native or near-native); at least 2 other additional languages appreciated
  • Relevant experience: +10-15 years of relevant legal experience with at least 5 years in a managerial position; previous experience in a digital industry is highly desirable
  • Professional qualification as lawyer
