The role

As an Engineering Manager, you are the Manager for Data Engineers supporting a specific Commercial business domain. Your Data Engineers are responsible for consuming data and building high-quality Data Products to meet the needs of the Business Owner of the domain. Their daily work is happening as part of a cross-functional Engineering team where the work is being planned and executed with support from Product Owners. The goal is to make the business domain as autonomous as possible for its data needs with minimal dependencies on other teams.  


The Data Engineers are involved in the processing and making use of data at scale, making sure the right quality controls are in place, ensuring that data is efficiently stored, can be efficiently accessed as well as building and maintaining different types of Data Products (e.g. visualizing business performance or providing self-service offerings or providing specific datasets). Another important responsibility is to make sure the right data is being made available to internal & external stakeholders.  


In your daily work, you will sync with other roles in Data Department about how to best meet the needs of each other's business domains and how to best meet data needs across domains. This is aligned with defined Architectural guidelines on how to describe, publish and consume data to and from other domains to allow scaling and efficiency. You will also align and sync with the Product Engineering Lead in the Engineering function on deliveries and requirements and technical quality.   

 

What you'll do

  • People management - making sure your team has the right skills, feel motivated and have what they need to be able to deliver efficiently.   
  • Defining process on how Data teams should work cross-functionally. 
  • Support coordinating technical deliveries, in close collaboration with other roles in the Engineering Team.  
  • Help out resolving any blockers that your Data Engineers might have.   
  • Work closely with peers from other domains to minimize dependencies and to align on sharing data across domains following architectural guidelines.   
  • Identify and support implementing improvements in the way of working.  
  • Continuously optimize the delivery process and resource allocation for the domain.   
  • Syncing with other roles in the Data Department to optimize delivery processes and efficiency across domains.   
  • Ensure solutions built meet technical, compliance and security guidelines and standards.   
  • Mentor the team to efficiently adapt to changing demands and requirements.  
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous learning about new technologies and what opportunities there might be.   
  • Ensure the team has the right processes in place to guarantee that the Data Products delivered are of high quality.   
  • Set OKRs and follow up on people performance.   
  • Continuously review and optimize the development, testing and release processes  
  • Ensure the team is set up with the right processes for 24/7 needs to handle incidents.   
  • Measure and follow up the efficiency in terms of time to market, incidents and data quality. 

 

To be successful in this role, we believe you have

  • A deep understanding and hands-on experience with Data Technologies and the different parts of an efficient data ecosystem.   
  • Strong management experience to lead and mentor a cross-functional data engineering team, ensuring efficient implementation and maintenance of data technologies while driving performance, quality and timely delivery of projects.
  • Ability to maintain detailed knowledge about data technologies and related tools and what it means to implement and maintain them in an efficient way.   
  • Experience with large scale data solutions where performance and quality are key.   
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.   
  • Strong focus on quality and how to best implement technical solutions to make use of data in the best way as well as sharing data with other teams.   
  • Ability to follow technical trends, best practices, new tools & technologies and take them into consideration for technical opportunities and designs.
